Top 10 Productivity Insights From My First 10 Episodes

The goal of my first ten episodes on the productive point of view podcast was to talk with people in all walks of life that had a successful mindset around productivity.

From business development people, to business owners, to Olympic athlete, I wanted to get a pulse on productivity.The journey turned out to be a great study in the mindset and process of how successful people individuals get things done everyday!

It’s no surprise they all shared at minimum 2-3 traits or practices to keep them productive and successful each day.

What is surprising is how many of them still struggled despite how successful they are. An encouraging note I took was to: Setup daily habits and do your best to stick to them. At the end of they day celebrate the wins and don’t beat yourself up over the misses.

The upcoming episodes will start to focus more specific areas within marketing and inbound digital activities, and how people become more efficient in those arenas.

So here are the top ten items that resounded through episodes 1-10.

Everyone I talked with used a version of this for their business and their own personal day to day. What they all had in common was the specific nature at which they casted vision.

Extremely detailed, extremely tangible, extremely focused, and extremely passionate about the outcome.

It sounds so simple to talk out what we want the end result to look like, but very few of us do it consistently.

Which version of a plan would you prefer to follow?

Plan A: Find a place to eat for the family

Plan B: Find an Italian place to eat on the West side of town, that serves dinner after 9pm.

It’s pretty obvious which one you could get a more quality end result for right? That is essentially how these people saw casting vision  for their days and weeks and months, to the best of their abilities.

Everyone also shared this trait. When you know EXACTLY what you want, you can be very deliberate about the actions in your day. Surgically focused on what needs to be done today for the outcome you want next week and next month.

Karlton Meadows talked about discipline a lot and how putting in the deliberate practice each and everyday is what gets people to mastery.

In the restaurant example above, knowing you need an Italian restaurant by itself helps you start at a much more focused position to be successful. You might start by googling ‘restaurants near me’ if you did not have direction.

Because you know where you need to end up though, you don’t have to go back and forth with your family on the many options you could come back with.

I need X, so I should do Y.


feed the beastHard things first

If you are a morning person or not, this is a shared physiological trait of everyone. You have the most physical, mental and emotional energy when you get up. That is when you should do the things that are most taxing to you. The best possible outcomes come from when you are most locked in. What we do know is that when you do things that are uncomfortable or taxing, you feel much better when they are over!

Spending your day without the weight of something on your mind gives you the freedom to be more creative and effective, and do your very best work.

one thingOne thing at a time

We are caught in a world of excess. This includes our to do lists, our goals and our ambitions. Everyone I talked with shared a sentiment of needing to narrow down the day to just a single goal at a time.

One person I talked to is very intentional about his focus on one thing at a time. Paul Kostial talked about by reducing the things he offered in his business, sales grew 300% nearly overnight from him.

SupportDelegate Your Weaknesses

Some people talk about outsourcing the lower dollar per hour work, or bringing in help for the excess, but that’s only part of delegating work. At the end of the day everyone is a genius at something specific.

The more time you spend in that place, the more you can improve your outcomes. Start delegating the things that are not your genius.

Tyler Nelson is in the arbitrage business. He buys low and sells high. What he knows is that he is really good at finding deals that make money. So one of the biggest things slowing down the growth of his business was all the packing and shipping of products to Amazon.

What did he do? Hired someone to pack and ship, so he could move more product!

weak link is youKnow Your Weaknesses

It will be tough to stay in your strengths when you don’t know, or admit, your weaknesses.

Each person I spoke with had a very clear understanding of the things they needed help with due to their own shortfalls. Don’t waste your time trying to get good at lots of things – find the strengths and move into those.

A great example of someone who has to know their weaknesses, is an Olympic athlete. Joe Jacobi talked about spending hundreds of hours practicing over a hundred versions of a stroke in his kayak.

He was so focused on what he could control that he became world class in water sports.


Even when you find your strengths and delegate your weaknesses, you still need to practice your genius. Talent vs work is still something successful people recognize a difference in. The really successful and productive people take the amazing foundation they have and build practical and pragmatic processes on top of the talent.

Josh Peak is a self admitted procrastinator, that had to develop a practice of discipline if he wanted to succeed.

He admitted it took a while to get ahold of some daily practices that stuck, but when he found the right ones he soared!

It is hard to get to the 4-5 places just listed if you are not asking the right questions of yourself and your team. Just by including a reason for the question in your inquiries you get a more productive answer to use.

One of the amazing insights I got from Krista Kotrla is that you have to get to the underlying motivation for things when working with a team. Asking questions that get to the root of things faster makes everyone more  productive!

accountable to youStay Accountable

We are only human 🙂 Everyone I chatted with had a person, a team, or a group with significant influence on their own decision making process. The famous saying is ‘What gets measured gets improved’. That starts with ourselves.

Whether you are like Kim Berges or not, you have to keep yourself accountable. Kim finds great value in the word ‘no’ in a busy, busy world.

When you understand where you want to go, it is often the consistency that keeps you from getting there.

Being accountable to others and yourself is often the biggest difference between those that consistently reach their goals, and those that just keep dreaming.


If you know your vision, your goals, your tasks ahead, who keeps you accountable and how to ask for help, then you have the foundation for success. This requires planning.

Each and every guest had a set of planning practices unique to their own situation. Some planned Sunday nights, some planned at 5pm, some planned at 5am… the similar thread is that each continues to plan.

And as my dad used to say to me what felt like weekly “Failure to plan on your part, does not make it an emergency on my part”
